Blake's Pride
Climate Zones: Zones 5-8
Notes: The medium-sized, yellow, russetted fruits have a sweet, rich
taste and aroma and ripen late, three weeks after 'Bartlett'. Produces
high yields. Highly resistant to fire blight. Best for long-season areas.
Pollinate with 'Bartlett'.
Bosc
Climate Zones: Zones 5-8
Notes: The medium-sized, long-necked, brown, russetted fruits are
firm and crisp. The flavor improves during 4-8 weeks of storage. Al-
though an old favorite and often recommended, 'Bosc' is susceptible to
fire blight and not the best choice for most organic growers. Best
suited to arid and semiarid locations. Several strains of 'Bosc' are
available. Requires cross-pollination.
Comice
Climate Zones: Zones 5-8
Notes: The large, greenish-yellow fruits have excellent flavor and tex-
ture, which reach their peak after 4 weeks of storage. Best for fresh
use. Ripens very late and can be challenging in short-season locations.
Has a medium-chilling requirement. Resistant to fire blight. Requires
cross-pollination.
