Medium- and High-Chilling European Pear Varieties
These varieties are suggested for moderate and cold climates.
Ayers
Climate Zones: Zones 5-7
Notes: The medium-sized, yellow, red-blushed fruits are very sweet
and suitable for fresh use or drying. Blooms early and ripens in late
mid-season to late season. Fire blight-resistant. Medium-chilling and
adaptable from the mid-southern United States to the Pacific Northw-
est and southwestern Canada.
Bartlett (Williams)
Climate Zones: Zones 5-8
Notes: The large, yellow, pink-blushed fruits have smooth, firm flesh
suitable for fresh use and canning. Ripens in late mid-season. Makes
up 80 percent of commercial pear production in North America and is
very popular in Europe, where it is known as 'Williams'. Do not pollinate
with 'Seckel'.
Bella di Guigno
Climate Zones: Zones 5-8
Notes: The medium-sized to large, greenish-yellow, red-blushed fruits
ripen very early. Requires cross-pollination.
