Kalibo
KALIBO , the capital of Aklan province, is the biggest - in fact the only - attraction of
Panay's north coast , which from Roxas in the east to Caticlan in the west (see p.340) is
mostly industrial and has no notable beaches. Served by flights from around Asia,
Kalibo lies on the well-trodden path to Boracay and for most visitors is simply the
place they get off the plane and onto the bus.
The town's major thoroughfare is Roxas Avenue , which runs into town from the
airport in the southeast, with most streets leading off it on a southwest-northeast axis.
It's really just another small town, full of tricycles and fast-food outlets, but it does
have an interesting museum , and every second week of January it hosts what is
probably the biggest street party in the country, the Ati-Atihan (see box, p.336), an
exuberant festival that celebrates the original inhabitants of the area and the later
arrival of Catholicism.
Museo It Akean
San Martelino St at Burgos St • Mon-Sat 8am-noon & 1-5pm • P15 • T 036 268 9260
Kalibo is home to one of Panay's best museums, the Museo It Akean . hough modest,
it's the only museum to document the cultural heritage of the Aklañons (Aklan
people), and contains exhibits of the area's old piña textiles, pottery, religious relics,
literature and Spanish-era artefacts, many
on loan from a uent local families. Among
the most interesting exhibits are rare
costumes that were worn by Aklan
tribespeople during festivals. Despite
serious earthquake damage in the 1980s,
the museum building retains some of the
original features; since its construction by
the Spanish in 1882, it has also been used
as a school, a courtroom and a garrison.

Bakhawan Eco-tourism Centre and
Mangrove Park
Bakhawan • Daily 8am-5pm • P20
A short tricycle ride from town, the
Bakhawan Eco-tourism Centre and
Mangrove Park is the site of a mangrove
replanting project. The project was
principally initiated to prevent flood and
storm surges, but also benefits local wildlife
and affords visitors the chance to experience
this little seen habitat up close. Once here
you can walk along a pretty 1km-long
boardwalk through the tangled mangrove
thickets to the beach.
