White Beach T 038 331 1316, W lapetraresort.com.
One of the few more moderately priced options in Anda.
Standard rooms are in a nondescript concrete block
(P3300), but the cheaper nipa fan huts look right over the
beach. There's a minimum two-nights advance booking,
but once you've seen the beach, had a swim in the pool

Siquijor
Small, laidback SIQUIJOR lies between the islands of Cebu, Negros and Bohol and
makes a worthwhile stop on a southern itinerary. Very little is known about the island
and its inhabitants before the arrival of the Spanish in the sixteenth century, who
named it the Isla del Fuego (“Island of Fire”) because of the eerie luminescence
generated by swarms of fireflies. This sense of mystery still persists today, with many
Filipinos believing Siquijor to be a centre of witchcraft (see box, p.302). Shamans aside,
the island is peaceful, picturesque and a pleasure to tour, whether by bike, tricycle,
motorbike or jeepney - the entire 72km coastal road is paved (a rare delight in the
Philippines) and tra c is light. The beaches alone make it worth a visit, but there are
also mountain trails , waterfalls and old churches to explore as well as decent scuba
diving. The island was shaken by the October 2013 quake (see box, p.292), but while
many roads and buildings were damaged, only one life was lost.
Most places to stay are within half an hour of the port towns of Siquijor and Larena ,
notably around San Juan , south of Siquijor, and at Sandugan , north of Larena. A
