The only legal camping on the island of Lana'i is at
Hulopo'e Beach Park
a five-minute
walk from the Manele Boat Harbor. Permits are available from the park ranger when you
show up at the park. If you can't find him, don't worry, he's sure to find you. Only Lana'i
residents are allowed to camp on the sand, so all visitors will need to camp in the grassy
area on the far side of the parking lot. The campground has restrooms, beach showers, run-
ning water, and the convenience of waking up and being the first people on the beach. Oth-
er than the Four Seasons, however, there isn't any place for food, so pack some supplies
with you or have a way of getting up into town. Fees are $30 for the campsite and $15 per
person per night, with a maximum stay of three nights.
Other than Hulopo'e there is some “unofficial” camping that takes place on other island
beaches, and while illegal, enforcement is rare.
Moloka'i is gloriously free of resorts, and no buildings on the island are taller than a palm
tree. Accommodation options on Moloka'i are restricted to condos, camping, and private
vacation rentals, and all provide calming sanctuaries where you can relax and hear yourself

While Kaluakoi was once the home of an oceanfront resort with an 18-hole golf course,
the resort was shuttered with the closing of the Moloka'i Ranch. The benefits of staying in
West Moloka'i are the comfortable, modern accommodations, the fact that you're within
walking distance of the island's best beaches, and the fiery sunsets that take place each
evening.
