Closer to the beach, the Paniolo Hale offers similar accommodation just steps from the
shoreline. Units here rent for $110-225 per night with a two- to three-night minimum, al-
though some units have longer minimum stays.
Some of the units at the old Kaluakoi Hotel complex, collectively called the Kaluakoi
Villas (1121 Kaluakoi Rd., Maunaloa, HI 96770, 808/552-2721 or 800/367-5004,
www.castleresorts.com , $150-190), are managed by Castle Resorts and Hotels. Each stu-
dio, suite, and cottage has been tastefully decorated and includes a color TV and a kitchen
or kitchenette.
Camping
The only legal camping on this side of the island is at Papohaku Beach Park, which fronts
the longest white sand beach on the island. The park area features restrooms, an outdoor
showerhead, and potable water. Permits for camping need to be obtained back in Kaun-
akakai through the County Parks Department (808/553-3204). Rates per night are $3/per-
son for Hawai'i residents and $5/person for nonresidents Monday-Thursday, and $5/per-
son and $8/person on Friday and the weekends. There is also plenty of unofficial camping
that takes place at Hale O Lono and Kawakiu, and while camping on the beach is technic-
ally illegal, rarely is it enforced.
CENTRAL MOLOKA'I
Under $100
In the cool uplands of Kala'e, Hale Manu Guesthouse (808/567-9136, www.halemalu-
molokai.com , $55-80) is a small, relaxed, one-bedroom accommodation with two guest
rooms and a small cottage. Guest rooms share a bathroom, and all rooms have access to
a full kitchen in the main house. Refreshingly basic and in a non-touristy part of the is-
land, guest rooms are $55/night, with an $80 rate for the cottage. Discounts are available
for longer stays, no credit cards accepted. The guesthouse is centrally located near the Ku-
alapu'u Coffee Farms and Kalaupapa Peninsula.
Over $150
Kaunakakai has the island's widest accommodation options and offers the closest thing to
an island “resort.”
