In-Depth Information
Over $150
The Courtyard Marriott (532 Keolani Pl., 808/871-1800, $200) is the newest and nicest
hotel in Kahului. Granted, it's just an airport hotel, but if that's what you're looking for,
then this is your best option. Rates that hover around $200/night are expensive for a view
of Costco. Nevertheless, the hotel is modern, new, and conveniently located near the North
Shore as well as the airport. There is also a large swimming pool, a fitness room, and a
trendy bistro, although there is a $10 parking fee if traveling with your own car.
South Maui
South Maui is the island's sunniest area and one of its most popular tourist zones. Ma'alaea
and Kihei are dominated by condos with few hotels or cottages. Wailea offers the island's
most luxurious resorts, although there are still some moderately priced condos. In the deep
south, Makena has one of the island's most affordable resorts as well as some oceanfront
condos.
MA'ALAEA
The only accommodations in Ma'alaea are condos, all of which are found along Hauoli
Street. Although the afternoons can be windy and the swimming is marginal, the benefits
of staying in Ma'alaea are the central location, being walking distance to Ma'alaea Harbor,
the ability to cook your own meals, and some of the most affordable ocean views on the
island. For rooms, check with Maalaea Bay Rentals (808/244-5627, 808/244-7012, or
800/367-6084, www.maalaeabay.com ) . This agency has an office at the Hono Kai Resort
(280 Hauoli St., Ma'alaea) and handles more than 140 units in a majority of the condos
along this road. All units are fully furnished with complete kitchens, TVs, telephones, and
a lanai, and each property has a pool and laundry facilities. Rates range from $150-300
mid-December-mid-April, but summer and fall rates can be as low as $100. Many of the
condos have a three-night minimum, or longer during the Christmas holidays. For monthly
stays, rates are reduced by 10 percent.
KIHEI
Under $150
Set in an old coconut grove, the Aston Maui Lu (575 S. Kihei Rd., 808/879-5881,
www.astonmauilu.com , $119-232), is an older 28-acre property at the north end of Kihei.
