GETTING THERE
Plane
When flying to Moloka'i there are two things you shouldn't expect: a big plane and a
smooth ride. Most airlines employ either 9- or 37-seat aircraft vulnerable to the brisk trade
winds, although what the flights lack in size they make up for in scenery. Often flights
from Maui will treat visitors to views of Moloka'i's dramatic northern sea cliffs as well
as aerial views of the Kalaupapa Peninsula. Sit on the left side of the aircraft for the best
chance of waterfall photography and coastal views. These flights may require you to step
on a scale with your bags, so leave the five-piece luggage set at home.
Mokulele Airlines (808/567-6381 Moloka'i or 866/260-7070 toll free,
www.mokuleleairlines.com ) offers direct flights to Honolulu and Kahului, although any
other city will require a connecting flight. Pacific Wings (808/567-6381 or 888/575-4546
toll free, www.pacificwings.com ) offers direct flights from Honolulu and Kahului to
Ho'olehua and can also provide connecting service to cities farther afield. In addition to
providing direct service to Kahului and Honolulu, Island Air (808/567-6840 Moloka'i or
800/652-6541 toll free, www.islandair.com ) is the only commercial airline also offering
direct service between Ho'olehua and the island of Lana'i. Of the three operators, Island
Air employs the largest airplanes and is less likely to be fully booked.
In late 2013, Ohana (800/367-5620, www.hawaiianairlines.com/ohana ), a new airline
operated by Hawaiian Airlines, plans to increase service to both Lana'i and Moloka'i. No
time tables were available at the time of publication, but travelers in 2014 and beyond
should benefit from this additional option.
For private flightseeing and helicopter flights, Makani Kai Air Charters (808/
834-5813 or 877/255-8532, www.makanikaiair.com ) operates between Moloka'i, Lana'i,
and O'ahu, and also has service between Kalaupapa and Ho'olehua. Kukui Air (808/
558-8407, www.kukuiair.com ) focuses exclusively on Moloka'i and runs hour-long scenic
flights departing out of Ho'olehua Airport.
Moloka'i Airport
The airport at Ho'olehua is a small, open-air facility where you still walk out on the run-
way to board your plane. It's a throwback to what the larger airports of Kahului and Kona
once were. Here in Ho'olehua many airlines still opt for calling roll by first-name rather
