than handing out tickets. There is one small gift shop and a small coffee shop selling
snacks and locally grown coffee, though I wouldn't plan on showing up three hours before
my flight and having many things to do. There is an Alamo rental car counter at the ter-
minal, taxis patrol outside, and tour companies all offer pickup for those arriving with a
previously scheduled reservation.
FERRY
Compared to flights from Kahului, the Moloka'i Ferry (877/500-6284,
www.molokaiferry.com ) is often slightly less expensive but takes longer—and there is a
greater chance that you'll throw up in a bag. Due to a recent approval of a fuel surcharge,
one-way fares are now $64 for adults and $32 for children. Usually discounts can be found
when buying tickets in batches of six.
Bad news aside, the ferry is a more economical option when traveling with children and
allows you to bring on more luggage. Running twice-daily between Kahului and Kaun-
akakai Harbors, the boat most often used is the Moloka'i Princess, a 100-foot-long, two-
story vessel capable of navigating the brutally rough Pailolo Channel, a name which dir-
ectly translates to “crazy fisherman” in reference to those who voluntarily head out into
the channel. The ride takes 1.25 hours and may be rough, but it's safe and it will get
you there. To avoid seasickness, take preventative medication or a natural remedy such as
ginger candy. Ferries depart from Kaunakakai Monday-Saturday at 5:15am and 4pm, with
Lahaina departures running Monday-Saturday at 7:15am and 6pm. A Sunday crossing de-
parts Moloka'i for Lahaina at 4pm and departs Lahaina for Molokai at 6pm.
For those only visiting for the day, rental cars can be combined with a round-trip ferry
ticket through the Moloka'i Ferry (877/500-6284, www.molokaiferry.com ) Cruise and
Car Package with a shuttle transporting you from the Kaunakakai Wharf to your rental
vehicle. Rates run $245 for a driver 25 years of age or older, and $145 for each additional
adult. Children are $55 from 4-12 and under 4 is free.
Moloka'i Outdoors (808/553-4477, www.molokai-outdoors.com ) also offers an Ali'i
Tour package which includes a round-trip ferry ticket from Maui and a six-hour guided
tour in an air-conditioned van once on the island. Rates for adults are $190 and $127 for
children.
