Kumu Farms
Given the recent explosion of farm to table cuisine, you could be forgiven for thinking that
Kumu Farms (Hua Ai Rd., 808/351-3326, www.kumufarms.com , 9am-4pm Tues.-Fri.,
free) is Moloka'i's “latest thing.” On the contrary, this fully working farm has been grow-
ing crops in the Moloka'i dirt since 1981 and is the best place on the island to pick up a
haul of fresh veggies straight from the kumu, or source. Not only can visitors peruse the
outdoor market for certified organic and non-GMO produce, but you can also glean some
expert culinary advice free of charge from recipes and cookbooks found sprinkled around
the shop. Five minutes west of the airport on Hua Ai Road, an easy turn off Highway 460,
this rapidly expanding farm now puts out over 20,000 pounds of papaya every week. Pick
up a bag of frozen basil and macadamia nut pesto for a homemade pasta dinner unlike any
in the islands.
