Kapuaiwa Coconut Grove in Kaunakakai
Ho'olehua “Post-A-Nut”
Never have kids loved going to the post office more than they do in Ho'olehua. A simple,
one-room building in the middle of arid homesteading land, the Ho'olehua Post Office
(Pu'u Pila Ave., 808/567-6144, 8:30am-4pm Mon.-Fri.) looks like something out of the
days of the old Wild West. Seeing that there is a post office in neighboring Kualapu'u, you
wonder what keeps this tiny outpost in business. The answer lies in something called the
“Post-A-Nut,” an artistic process whereby you can go to post office, decorate a dried out
coconut, and then ship it off to anywhere across the globe where you think your art will be
appreciated. The postmaster, Gary, is a certified agricultural inspector, making it legal for
him to inspect and ship your nut. Rates to the mainland run $10-14, although the brown
canvases have allegedly been shipped as far away as Kyrgyzstan, Namibia, and even the
Antarctic.
