In-Depth Information
Fruit Stands
The first fruit stand on the road is Huelo Lookout (7600 Hana Hwy., 808/280-4791,
www.huelolookout.coconutprotectors.com , open daily), just past mile marker 4. Enjoy
your fresh fruit, smoothies, and coconut candies at the coastal lookout a few steps behind
the stand. They also sell local arts and crafts.
Other fruit stands may appear along the roadside. Make your next stop at Uncle
Harry's (808/633-3129, 10am-3pm daily, hours vary), which offers intriguing conversa-
tion with locals along with basic snacks and drinks. The yellow plywood stand is toward
the top of the road leading down to Wailua. You'll see more fruit stands at mile markers
28.3 and 30.7.
Food Carts
Inside the Garden of Eden is the aptly named Garden Gourmet Café (10600 Hana Hwy.,
808/269-4060, 9am-3pm daily, $8-12), a simple food truck serving fish tacos, pizzas,
spring rolls, and coffees. There's no arguing with the tranquil surroundings or the impec-
cably manicured grounds. While the plates aren't filling enough for a full meal, they're a
welcome hunger-buster if you haven't eaten since breakfast. Expect to wait a little while
since it's all prepared fresh. The outdoor setting is worth the wait. You also need to pack
out your trash.
Market
As you pass the turnoff for Jaws and make your way deeper into Ha'iku, at mile marker
14.5, you'll see run-down little Maui Grown Market and Deli (6:30am-6pm) which ad-
vertises itself as the “Last Stop Before Hana.” Although this may have been true at one
time, there are now a number of stops between here and Hana, so don't worry about im-
pending starvation. The small store is a convenient place for a sandwich, snacks, or cold
drinks. It's almost worth a stop to experience its old-school existence.
The accurately named Halfway to Hana ( www.halfwaytohanamaui.com , 8:30am-4pm
daily, $2-6, cash only) is located at the 17.3 mile marker between the Ke'anae Overlook
and the turnoff for Wailua. It's basically a hot dog, sandwich, and shave ice stand with an
ATM around the corner, making it the closest thing to a store around Ke'anae. Ask about
the fresh baked banana bread.
Thai
You'll be blown away by My Thai (mile marker 28.7, variable hours, $10-13) food stall,
in the Nahiku Marketplace. Their steaming plate of chicken pad thai is fresher and tasti-
