Local Style
Also located in the Nahiku Marketplace, quick and convenient Up In Smoke BBQ (mile
marker 28.7, 10am-5pm daily, $5-9) serves lunch plate classics alongside a taco menu fea-
turing shrimp, pork, chicken, and steak. The chili and rice is the best bang for your buck,
but it's hard to argue with the kalua pig.
Coffee Shop
For an afternoon pick-me-up, the Nahiku Roadside stand (mile marker 26.5, 10am-4pm
Sun.-Thurs.) offers fruit, coffee, tea, banana bread, and patio seating that looks out over
the highway.
The best-and earliest—cup of coffee on the east end of the island is served at M Nahiku
Café (mile marker 28.7, 6am-5pm daily), inside the Nahiku Marketplace. Choose from
multiple flavors of Maui-grown coffee as well as espresso drinks. There is also a decent
array of food options such as toasted bagels and pastries.
Ice Cream
One of the last roadside stands you'll encounter before the town of Hana is Coconut
Glen's (mile marker 27.5, 808/248-4876, www.coconutglens.com , 10:30am-5pm daily).
“Coconut Glen” is the Willy Wonka of Maui, a chef from Boston who moved to the island
in 2006. Once he realized the culinary possibilities of the coconut, he constructed this road-
side stand as a means of sharing coconut concoctions sourced directly from the land, most
notably vegan ice cream made with fresh coconut milk. Much of the building itself is made
from recycled materials gathered around East Maui.
HANA
In the last few years, Hana has seen a huge proliferation of food options. However too
many visitors continue to drive to Hana Bay thinking it's the end of the road and don't
take the time to look around. Spend the day in Hana and you'll be rewarded with a tasty
cornucopia.
