Turnoff for Lower Nahiku Road and pullout for Makapipi Falls
Nahiku Village
Just before mile marker 25 you'll cross over a bridge spanning thundering Makapipi Falls.
Immediately on the other side of the bridge is the turnoff for Lower Nahiku Village, a laid-
back, rural outpost where agriculture and family are the pillars of existence. At the end of
the road down into Nahiku you'll find a stunning overlook where multiple waterfalls cas-
cade into the sea. If you skipped the drive on the Ke'anae Peninsula, consider making the
steep, 2.5-mile descent to the shoreline for the chance to witness this pristine section of
coastline. The road is narrow and at many points only a single lane, so take it slow. Since
this is a small community, be respectful of
Kapu
(No Trespassing) signs placed on private
property. Park your car well off the road and pack out any garbage. Many village residents
would rather go back to the days when the overlook was completely off the tourist map.
As long as you respect to those who live here, you in turn will be met with respect.
Once you travel 2.2 miles, you will reach the
Nahiku Protestant Church
and a fork
in the road. Go left. Continue on this road for another 100 yards to reach a rickety wooden
bridge, which offer a view of the dense jungle. In another 0.2 mile the road dead-ends in a
parking area which gazes back across Honolulunui Bay toward the Wailua Peninsula. Walk
back uphill for about 30 yards, where you see an overlook for a small waterfall tumbling
directly into the sea. Follow the small trail from the end of the parking area leading back
into a cove and you'll encounter a second waterfall. There isn't much swimming here; the
main draws are the coastal views and the streams which end their mountain-to-sea journey
in a dramatic terminus.
