FLIGHTSEEING TOURS
While helicopters are the best choice for seeing the waterfalls of West Maui and the north-
ern shore of Moloka'i, the only way that you're going to experience Kilauea Volcano
on the Big Island is by taking a flightseeing tour with Maui Air (808/877-5500,
www.volcanoairtours.com ) out of either Kahului or Kapalua Airport. The two-hour flight
from Kahului Airport passes by the North Shore of Maui and the waterfalls of Kohala on
the Big Island's northwestern tip and circles over Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park look-
ing for active lava flows. The plane can accommodate 10 passengers, and you're likely to
be sharing the ride with other guests. Those who sit toward the back won't have as much
of the wing obstructing the view. At $385/person it isn't a cheap trip, and since weather is
a highly variable factor, it can be a gamble. Also, as the eruption at Kilauea is constantly
shifting, there's no guarantee of seeing red lava, although on those clear, lava-filled days
when everything comes together, this is the best way to experience both islands from the
air.

Kahului
The only golf course in Kahului is The Dunes at Maui Lani (1333 Maui Lani Pkwy., 808/
873-0422, www.dunesatmauilani.com , 6:30am-6pm daily), a Scottish-style links course
that weaves its way through natural sand dunes. Course designer Robert Nelson utilized
the natural topography of the dunes in creating this 6,841-yard course, and as can be ex-
pected, it includes a healthy amount of bunkers. On the par-5 18th, two pot bunkers short
of the green famously challenge even those with the lowest of handicaps. The afternoon
trade winds can make this course difficult, and the greens fees are priced accordingly: $112
for visitors, $99 after 11am, and $79 after 2pm. Rates are substantially cheaper for resid-
ent golfers. The central location makes it easy to sneak in a round before heading to the
airport.
Wailuku
Set on the hillside in Waikapu, the 6,554-yard Kahili Golf Course (2500 Honoap'ilani
Hwy., 808/242-4653, www.kahiligolf.com , 6am-6pm daily) is one of the island's best val-
ues. Greens fees for visitors are $99, although those teeing off after 2:30pm can squeeze in
