In-Depth Information
18 holes for only $59. The bicoastal views are better than at Maui Lani, although instead
of links-style golf you have a course which is set on a gently sloping hillside. Wind can be
an issue in the afternoons. It's a 30-minute drive from the resort complexes.
Intermediate golfers who don't want to shell out too much for a round can head to
the Waiehu Golf Course (200 Halewaiu Rd., 808/243-7400, 6:45am-5pm weekdays,
6am-5pm weekends). This par-72, 6,330-yard municipal course is popular with locals be-
cause of the $25 resident's rate, although visitors can expect to pay $55 plus a $20 cart
fee. The front nine are fairly straightforward with little elevation gain, and three of the
holes go right along the shoreline. The back nine gain a little in elevation and offer views
looking out over Waihe'e Reef, where humpback whales can often be seen jumping dur-
ing winter. While the views can indeed be spectacular, due to its northeasterly exposure
the trade winds can be stiff in the afternoon, so it's best to secure a tee time before 9am to
avoid them.
TENNIS
Kahului
The best courts in Kahului are the two at Kahului Community Center, located in a shaded
area of the large community park. To reach the courts, turn on Onehe'e Avenue behind the
Ka'ahumanu Shopping Center and continue for a quarter of the mile. The courts will be on
your left.
