In-Depth Information
In the Kahana Gateway Center, Maui Brewing Company (4405 Honoapi'ilani Hwy.,
808/669-3474, www.mauibrewingco.com , open until midnight) is the island's only brew-
ery. Sit at the bar so you can keep your beer cold on the slab of ice that's inside the bar.
There are over a dozen beers only available on draft at the brewery. My personal favorite
brews are the La Perouse White and the Drip Dry Coffee Stout.
Dollie's (4310 Lower Honoapi'ilani Rd., 808/669-0266, www.dolliespizzakahana.com ,
open until midnight) is the West Side's de facto sports bar where cheap beer and good pizza
are served throughout the night. This is where island locals come to catch the Monday
Night Football game or Sunday NFL. Fifteen different televisions also show NBA, hockey,
college sports, and whichever game you're hoping to catch.
In the strip mall by Times Supermarket in Honokowai Soup Nutz/Java Jazz (3350
Lower Honoapi'ilani Rd., 808/667-0787, www.javajazz.net , open until 10pm) has live mu-
sic seven nights a week 7pm-10pm in an eccentric, artsy, and dimly lit interior. Coffee shop
by day and trendy parlor by night, this establishment has a decor that includes a bear rug,
a disco ball, and a chandelier made up of dozens of different wine bottles. This is a good
place to sit and listen to some underground acoustic artists.
KA'ANAPALI
Whalers Village
Of the few daytime entertainment options which don't involve the beach (or golf), the
free whale talks in Whalers Village take place with the most regularity. In the Whalers
Museum on the third story of the mall, guest speakers from NOAA and the Hawaiian Is-
lands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary regularly give free lectures about the
island's winter visitors. Talks are every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 11am-noon and
2pm-3pm. Mention that you're attending the talk and you'll gain free entry to the museum
(usually $3).
Beyond the free whale talks, the center stage area at Whalers Village constantly teems
with free events. Stalwarts of the entertainment schedule include lei making classes, hula
classes, arts and crafts sessions, and live music on most weekend nights. While the sched-
ule of events is constantly shifting, you can visit www.whalersvillage.com for an up-to-
date calendar of the current month's activities.
For live music, at any time of the afternoon you can find a band or ukulele musician
strumming live tunes along the Ka'anapali strip. Hula Grill in Whalers Village also has
