In-Depth Information
Entertainment
West Maui is the island's entertainment hot spot. Here you'll find the island's best lu'aus
and most happening bars. You can't walk more than 10 yards in Lahaina without trip-
ping over an evening drink special. More than just booze and bad decisions, West Maui is
also home to family entertainment options ranging from free hula performances and whale
lectures to evening magic performances. Despite the happening surroundings, however, if
you're the clubbing type who likes to party into the wee hours of the morning, you'll be
out of luck since most bars close by 11pm, and only a handful stay open later than 1am.
Also, even though almost all of the nightlife options involve bars and pubs that have lively
atmospheres, the options for dancing are woefully inadequate. For the most up-to-date info
on the latest evening scene, pick up a free copy of Maui Time newspaper, or, check out
The Grid section on the website at www.mauitime.com .
KAPALUA, NAPILI, AND HONOKOWAI
Evening Shows
Can't get enough of ki ho'alu (slack key guitar)? The Masters of Slack Key (5900 Lower
Honoapi'ilani Rd., www.slackkeyshow.com , 7:30pm Wed.) performance at the Aloha
Pavilion of the Napili Kai Beach Resort is the best show you'll find on the island. Tickets
can either be purchased online or at 6:45pm when the doors first open. Prices for the show
are normally $38, although you can also book a package dinner combo for $79 which in-
cludes a sunset dinner at the Sea House restaurant immediately before the show.
Bars, Live Music, and Nightlife
The late-night karaoke sessions at Sansei (600 Office Rd., 808/669-6286,
www.sanseihawaii.com , 5:30pm-10pm Mon.-Thurs., 5:30pm-1am Fri.-Sat.) restaurant in
the Kapalua resort are the most happening evenings on the northwestern side. This popular
sushi and sake bar stays open until 1am on Thursday and Friday during karaoke night, and
more so than the drinks and the singing, the main draw is the award-winning late-night
menu (10pm-1am) that offers dozens of sushi plates at heavily discounted rates.
A short walk away at the Ritz-Carlton hotel you can find live music in the Alaloa
Lounge Thursday-Monday evenings. It has the most consistent live music in the Kapalua
resort.
