Often when it's raining in Kapalua, the showers haven't made their way down as far as
Ka'anapali, and the courts will be nice and dry.
Lahaina
The best courts in Lahaina are at the Lahaina Civic Center across from Wahikuli Beach
Park. There are nine courts here, and with the slight sea breeze coming off the water, they
are a few degrees cooler than the courts on Front Street. Since these are public courts, there
is no fee to play, but there also isn't any sort of pro shop or tennis-related facilities. There
is a water fountain as well as a public restroom, and a few of the courts are lit at night.
To find the courts, turn on Leiali'i Parkway off Honoapi'ilani Highway and make a left on
Ka'aahi Street. Parking is available either on the side of the road or in a parking area at the
end of the last court.
In the center of Lahaina town, the Wakida Courts on Front Street between the banyan
tree and Kamehameha Iki Park are named for the legendary Lahaina tennis coach Shigeto
“Shigesh” Wakida who trained hundreds—if not thousands—of Lahaina youth over his
decades of running the Lahaina tennis program. These courts bearing his name remain as
the center of Lahaina's junior tennis scene and are where much of Lahaina chooses to play.
Only on the rarest of days will there be any sort of wind or rain at these free courts. A
small water fountain offers drinking water, and exceptionally dirty bathrooms are located
in the park on the south side of the basketball court. On the far end of the park behind the
baseball field, tucked back from the road, are two additional courts. They're nicer than the
courts on Front Street, but they are also an unofficial gathering place for Lahaina's home-
less community.

The best place for workout classes on the northwestern side of the island is the ludicrously
luxurious Kapalua Spa (100 Bay Dr., 808/665-8282, www.kapaluaspa.com , 5:30am-7pm
daily) in Kapalua just north of Kapalua Bay. Despite the fact that this is one of the toniest
resort areas in Hawai'i, the fitness specials offered at the spa are some of the most afford-
