History of Seoul Fortress
By the late 14th century an 18.6km wall encircled Seoul, linking up the peaks of Bukak-
san, Naksan (125m), Namsan (262m) and Inwangsan (338m) and punctuated by four ma-
jor gates facing north, south, east and west. Over time parts of the wall were demolished
and today only 10.5km of it remains. The city has been restoring some of the missing sec-
tions, such as stretches that are part of Dongdaemun Design Plaza & Park and across Mt
Namsam. A hiking route around the original fortress is detailed in the free English-lan-
