BUKAKSAN & SEOUL'S FORTRESS WALLS
In 1968 North Korean agents launched an assassination attempt on then-president Park Chung-hee by climbing
over Bukaksan and into the presidential compound of Cheongwadae. From then until 2006 the mountain was off
limits to the public. Security is still tight but the 342m peak is now open, on a steep hike along the most spectacular
section of Seoul's Fortress Walls.
High Security Area
Unlike other remaining sections of the walls, military security is very evident around
Bukaksan. You need to show your passport or other photo ID and register when you enter
at Changuimun, the old sub-gate in Buam-dong, or Sukjeongmun, the main north gate,
which can be accessed from Samcheong Park; there's no need to register in advance as
mentioned on the website. This section of the wall is also open only during daylight hours
and photography is allowed at designated spots only, such as Baekakmaru, the summit
