Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute sits on a hill overlooking Troy, New York, and
the Hudson River Valley, as shown in Figure 8.1. On the far side of the river to
the southwest is Albany, the state capital.
There are a number of differences between Rensselaer and Indiana University.
Rensselaer is a private university with approximately 7,500 students on its
275-acre Troy campus and a satellite campus in Hartford, Connecticut. Indiana
University, Bloomington, a public university, and the flagship campus in the
Indiana University system on over 1933 acres, had over 42,000 enrolled students
in 2010.
Rensselaer, founded in 1824, is the oldest technology-based university in the
English-speaking world, and retains a strong focus on its technological roots,
especially engineering. Coincidentally, classes were first offered at IU in 1824.
IU
'
s roots lie in the liberal arts and sciences. It was officially designated the
“
and its first secular president was not elected until 1883. In
1945, it became the home of the Kinsey Institute for sexual research.

IU
s mission remains one of providing higher education to primarily Indiana
residents. Although 68% of students were from the state in 2010, 49 other states
and the District of Columbia are also represented, as are 165 foreign nations.
Rensselaer consistently ranks in the top 50 universities worldwide for technol-
ogy, and among the top 50 universities in the United States for overall
academics.
