Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
As of this writing, IU does not offer an undergraduate video game degree.
However, the Department of Telecommunications offers a sequence of related
courses in Telecommunications devoted to Games and Interactive Media from
which students can create a major. Area Certificates in Game Studies and New
Media and Interactive Storytelling are offered to non-Telecom students. And IU
has an Independent Major program where students, working with faculty
mentors, can craft their own personal majors in many fields, including video
games.
Rensselaer has its interdisciplinary Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences
(GSAS) program, which offers multiple majors, minors, and dual degrees in all
facets of video games with concentrations in fields such as Arts, Human
Computer Interaction, Computer Science, Management/Entrepreneurship,
Cognitive Science, and Physics.
Each approach reflects its institution
'
s history and mission. IU
'
s program grew
from its strong liberal arts tradition. Rensselaer
'
s program clearly reflects its
science and technology roots.
While all of my students are of the gamer generation, the above facts go a long way
toward explaining the differences between the two institutions and how the
multiplayer classroom was affected when I moved from one institution to the other.
