In-Depth Information
» In the USVI, AT&T ( www.att.com/wireless ) and Sprint ( www.sprint.com ) are the is-
lands' main service providers. If you use these companies at home, it's possible you may
not have a roaming fee, but definitely check in advance.
» In the BVI, CCTGlobal( www.cctwireless.com ) , Lime( www.time4lime.com ) and Di-
gicel( www.digicelbvi.com ) provide the local service.
» If you have a European, Australian or other type of unlocked GSM phone, buy a local
SIM card to reduce costs. They cost about $20, which includes $10 of air time (at roughly
$0.30 per minute calling time to the US). This mainly applies in the BVI, where SIM cards
are easy to get at local shops. It's difficult to find them in the USVI.
Domestic & International Dialing
» All phone numbers in the Virgin Islands consist of a three-digit area code -
340 in the
USVI, 284 in the BVI - followed by a seven-digit local number.
» If you are calling from abroad, dial all 10 digits preceded by
1. If you are calling loc-
ally, just dial the seven-digit number.
» To call from the islands to the US or Canada (or between the USVI and BVI), dial
1
+ area code + the seven-digit number.
» For direct international calls, such as to Europe, dial
011 + country code + area code
+ local phone number.
» Many businesses also have toll-free numbers; these begin with 800, 888 or 877 and must
be preceded by 1.
Emergency Numbers
» Dial
911 in the USVI, and
911 or 999 in the BVI.
Public Phones
» In the USVI, pay phones are easy to find in commercial areas. Local calls cost $0.25 to
$0.35. In the BVI, working pay phones are few and far between.
Phonecards
» Prepaid phonecards usually offer the best per-minute rates for long-distance and interna-
tional calling. You can buy them at grocery stores throughout the Virgin Islands.
