VIRGIN GORDA IN…
One Day
Spend the morning splashing around The Baths . For fewer people and better
snorkeling, kick over to Spring Bay . Sit on the porch at Mad Dog and revive with a
piña colada. Hopefully you remembered to call ahead and make reservations at
Thelma's Hideout for a West Indian dinner.
Two Days
Hike up Virgin Gorda Peak for sweet views from the top. Reward the effort with a
trip to one of the North Sound resorts. Bitter End Yacht Club fulfills with kitesurf-
ing lessons, snorkeling tours and monumental buffets. Or ferry over to Saba Rock
for happy hour.
Spanish Town & the Valley
Spanish Town isn't a town so much as a long road with businesses strung along it. It's the
commercial center of Virgin Gorda, and probably gets its name from a (severe) corrup-
tion of the English word 'penniston,' a blue woolen fabric used long ago for making slave
clothing on the island, rather than from any Spanish connections. Islanders referred to their
settlement as Penniston well into the 1850s.
The harbor dredged here in the 1960s is home to today's Yacht Harbour, the heart of
Spanish Town. Overall the settlement is a sleepy place, but it has shopping, dining and
nightlife with a fresher mix of West Indians, expats and travelers than you get at the is-
land's resorts.
