The Baths PARK
(admission $3; sunrise-sunset) This collection of sky-high boulders, near the island's
southwest corner, marks a national park and the BVI's most popular tourist attraction. The
rocks - volcanic lava leftovers from up to 70 million years ago, according to some estim-
ates - form a series of grottoes that flood with sea water. Wander around them and you'll
see shafts of sunlight sparking the rocks' kaleidoscope of colors. The area also makes for
unique swimming and snorkeling; the latter is distinctive as many boulders lurk under wa-
ter, too.
The Baths would easily live up to its reputation for greatness if it wasn't overshadowed
by the adjacent Devil's Bay National Park to the south, and the cool trail one must take
to get there. Actually, there are two trails. The less exciting one takes off behind the tax-
is at the Baths' parking lot. The trail you want though leaves from the Baths' beach and
goes through the 'Caves.' During the 20- minute trek, you'll clamber over boulders, slosh
through tidal pools, squeeze into impossibly narrow passages and bash your feet against
rocks. Then you'll drop out onto a sugar-sand beach.
While the Baths and Devil's Bay stir the imagination, the places are often overrun with
tourists. By 9am each morning fleets of yachts have moored off the coast, and visitors have
been shuttled in from resorts and cruise ships. All you have to do though is come at sunrise
or late in the afternoon, and you'll get a lot more elbow room. Make sure to lather up with
insect repellent.
The Baths' beach has bathrooms with showers, a snack shack and snorkel gear rental
($10). Taxis run constantly between the park and ferry dock (round trip $8).
Yacht Harbour MALL
( www.virgingordayachtharbour.com ) The dredged harbor at Spanish Town came as a
result of Laurence Rockefeller's construction of Little Dix Bay. Today, the development is
known as Yacht Harbour and contains many of the island's essentials services (ie banks) as
well as popular places to eat, shop and drink. While the style of this mall seems more like
what you would find in Southern California than in the West Indies, Yacht Harbour is well
kept without being sterile or banal.
