The Virgins are divided between the USA (St Thomas, St John, St Croix) and the UK (Tor-
tola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, Anegada, Out Islands). St Thomas is the region's hub,
jam-packed with cruise ships, resorts and jewelry shops. St John is the greenest island, lit-
erally and figuratively; it's mostly national parkland dotted with ecofriendly lodgings. St
Croix floats out by its lonesome, offering a mix of rainforest, sugar plantations, old forts
and great scuba diving. Tortola lets its hair down with sailing, surfing and full-moon
parties, while plump Virgin Gorda offers boulder-studded beaches and billionaire yacht
havens. For solitude there's the little guys - happy-go-lucky Jost Van Dyke and sleepy
Anegada - each with fewer than 200 people. And on the Out Islands, it's really just golden
beaches, blue sea and maybe a bar or two.
