Figure 3.2. Survey routes in southern Lao PDR, from Savannakhet to Daen Sawan
through Muang Phin and Xephoe along National Route (NR-) 9; from Savannakhet,
through Pakse to the southern border along NR-13; from Pakse to Attapeu through
Pakxong, Thateng, and Xekong along NR-23 and NR-16; from Attapeu to Sanamxai
along NR-18; and from Attapeu to Ban Xe Xou along a new road. Hatched areas

collected a record on the GPS coordinates and altitude of each location. We
chose village heads or other persons who were well versed in the local wild-
life as interviewees. By using photos and brochures with morphological and
behavioral characteristics of primates that are supposedly distributed in Laos,
we determined the species inhabiting each area.
We observed pet primates, and recorded their morphology. We then inter-
viewed pet owners about the pet's origin, how it was acquired, whether hunt-
ing was involved, and the reason why they chose to keep a pet. We measured
the crown-rump length (i.e., from the vertex of the head to the caudal end of
the ischial callosity) and tail length in twelve macaques using a tape measure.
Relative tail length, which is the significant subspecific and inter-locality char-
acteristic in macaques (Fooden, 1997 ; Fooden and Albrecht, 1999 ; Hamada
et al ., 2006 ), was calculated by dividing the tail length by the crown-rump
