The results reported here are mainly from the studies of Sussman and
Jamieson, many of which derive from yet unpublished data. Our main study
site was Mon Vallon, located at the western base of the Montagne du Rempart,
in western Mauritius. The site forms a part of a private reserve owned by
Médine Estates Ltd. The reserve is bordered by fields of sugarcane. At the
time of the early studies, the reserve was a mosaic of lowland vegetation types
interlaced with savanna. To the south, a steep ridge rises and falls away again,
the ground is very rocky, and a Leucaena-Furcraea thick formation occurred.
This was generally an open scrub with a thick undergrowth of aloes and with
scattered trees about 4-5 meters in height. At the foot of the southern slope of
the hill, and along streams and tributaries running through the site, there was
