dystonia (Parkinson’s disease)

Muscle rigidity or stiffness that can prevent movement, force the body into unusual positions, and cause painful muscle spasms. Dystonia can be an idiopathic movement disorder (exist alone without apparent cause) or a symptom of other movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. in either circumstance, it probably represents dysfunction of the basal ganglia. In Parkinson’s, this damage is the death of dopaminergic neurons with resulting depletion of dopamine. occasionally dystonia affecting an extremity (often a foot) is one of the first symptoms of Parkinson’s. Dystonia tends to worsen as the disease progresses. Sometimes dystonia takes the form of rhythmic, repetitious movement, such as of the lips or tongue.
