The proton motive force, abbreviated Dp, is the electrochemical proton potential across a membrane expressed in terms of volts, which is the energy available to drive ATP formation, metabolite transport, or motility. At 25°C, the value of Dp in millivolts is approximately equal to 59 (DpH) + DY, where DY is the membrane potential in millivolts. See Chemiosmotic Coupling for further details.
