Requirements of Batteries for the Vehicle

Automobile batteries work as the source of energy in vehicles when the engine and hence the alternator is not functioning. Several important functions are performed by a battery as follows :
(a) It serves as a power storage and releases the same quickly to operate a vehicle starter motor.
(b) It provides power to the parking lights for a reasonable time.
(c) It allows operation of accessories when the engine is not running.
(d) It acts as a swamp to damp out fluctuation of system voltage.
(e) It allows dynamic memory and alarm systems to remain active when a vehicle is left for a period of time.

The first two of the above functions are the most important and form a major part of the criteria used to select the most suitable battery for a vehicle. Finally, the vehicle battery must be able to carry out all the functions over a wide temperature range in the order of 243 to 343 K. This includes very cold starting conditions as well as potentially high temperature under the bonnet.
