8.2. As it is for the atmosphere, hydrostatic balance is an excellent
approximation for the ocean. Integrate the hydrostatic equation to find the
pressure at the base of the pycnocline at about 1 km depth in the ocean.
This integration is different from the atmospheric case because you cannot
use the ideal gas law to eliminate density. Use Figure 8.8 to find a way to
treat density in this problem, and consult figures in previous chapters for
any values you need to complete the calculation. Make sure your results are
reasonable, and justify all assumptions.
