Adding to the danger and disaster of Black Sunday in Cincinnati was a mammoth series of
fires that erupted in the Cumminsville industrial district when giant gasoline storage tanks
overturned, sending thousands of gallons of fuel into Mill Creek. A stray spark ignited the
floating gasoline. The resulting fires, one of which is shown here, took more than 12 hours
to put out and burned more than 3.5 square miles. Damage was estimated at $1.5 million.
In 1920, entrepreneur Powel Crosley set out to purchase a simple radio set. Shocked by the
high prices he found, he decided to build one himself. He did so, and before long he was
producing inexpensive radios by the thousands at his Cincinnati plant. A fire broke out in
