In-Depth Information
This handsome Huntington building on the southwest corner of Fourth Avenue and Eleventh
Street was christened the Coal Exchange Building when it was built in 1925. By 1937, the
Chesapeake and Ohio Railway had purchased it and renamed it the C&O Building. In 1937,
the building also housed the Huntington District offices of the U.S. Army Corps of Engin-
eers. After the C&O moved out and sold the structure, its name was changed back to the
Coal Exchange Building.
The 1937 floodwaters inundated several offices located on the east side of Eleventh Street
between Fourth and Fifth Avenues. Among them was the Thornburg Insurance Agency. As
the agency's sign proudly notes, it was established in 1881, making it almost as old as the
city itself. Note how well dressed the gentlemen in the boat are. Did they dress that morning
thinking it would be just another routine day at the office?
