graph, rowers in a skiff survey the city's Eighth Street as the water rises to the roofline of
the old City Market, visible under the Fourth Avenue traffic signal. The Montgomery Ward
store is at the right and the Dickinson Brothers furniture store at left.
This close-up view of the Dickinson Brothers furniture store, located on the northwest
corner of Fourth Avenue and Eighth Street, vividly shows the depth of the floodwaters that
stretched up and down Fourth Avenue, one of the downtown's main thoroughfares. There is
a gradual grade between Fourth and Fifth Avenues, which halted the water's spread, keep-
ing it from extending past Fifth Avenue.
The Cabell County Courthouse, which occupies a full block between Fourth and Fifth Aven-
ues and Seventh and Eighth Streets, became an improvised port for U.S. Coast Guard boats
brought to Huntington city for rescue work. The courthouse grounds became a virtual lake,
making it ideal for mooring the boats.
