In-Depth Information
Point Pleasant grew up at the very edges of the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers and was mostly
built on flat land, so it was regularly flooded by high water. In this 1937 view, a man rows a
boat along Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets, the heart of the town's commer-
cial district. Just visible in the far background can be seen the Lowe Hotel, a showplace
when it opened in 1903. (Courtesy Point Pleasant River Museum.)
Today the Point Pleasant River Museum is housed in the brick store building seen at left
center in this 1937 flood view, taken from the Shadle Bridge crossing the Kanawha River.
Seen here is the rear of the store building, marked by a tall chimney. Just visible in the
background are the twin spires of the Silver Bridge, which linked the town with Ohio until it
fell in 1967, a tragedy that claimed 46 lives. (Courtesy Point Pleasant River Museum.)
