In-Depth Information
It is not clear whether the water is coming up or going down in this 1937 Parkersburg flood
photograph, as it is not dated. The scene is Fifth and Julian Streets looking toward the old
Belpre Bridge. Parkersburg residents took the flooding in stride. Water and telephone ser-
vice were maintained, though limited. Refugees were evacuated and housed in various
buildings on high ground. (Photograph by Artcraft Studio.)
The elevated tracks of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad bisect Parkersburg at Sixth Street,
then cross the river to Ohio. Self-taught professional photographer Vincent “Jimmy”
