Sharpsburg is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, about five miles northeast of
Pittsburgh on the Allegheny River. In this January 1937 view of Sharpsburg's Main Street,
the water is little more than ankle deep. Nevertheless, the men have their rowboats ready
and are preparing for flood duty. The police officer standing at the far left seems ready to
direct traffic, although the only traffic moving this day will be by boat.
Although it was little consolation for those who saw their homes and businesses flooded, the
1937 flood in Pittsburgh was no match for that of 1936. The crest in 1937 was 35 feet. That
