The Joseph Horne Company at Penn Avenue and Stanwick Street, for many years one of
downtown Pittsburgh's largest and finest stores, is said to have suffered more than $1 milli-
on in damages when it was inundated in the city's 1936 flood. When the water went down,
truck after truck of waterlogged merchandise had to be hauled away. Later a bronze marker
showing how high the floodwater reached was applied to the side of the store building.
