THE 1936 FLOOD
More than 60 inches of snow fell in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, area during the winter of
1935-1936, and when temperatures quickly warmed, the stage was set for a massive flood.
The headlines on the front page of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for March 18 gave readers
the grim news: “River at 34 Feet, Still Rises; Downtown Area Under Water.” Here a hardy
crew of Pittsburghers can be seen paddling a scow down a water-covered street. Their
cargo: food for hungry victims of the flood.
