floated down the river from Warrenton, Ohio, to Sistersville, West Virginia, a distance of
more than 100 miles. If you listen, you can almost hear the school bell clanging as the river
tosses the little building about and sweeps it downstream.
The 1907 flood in Wheeling rose so rapidly that it trapped this Pennsylvania Railroad train
at the rail depot at Eleventh and Water Streets. Stranded passengers had to be put up in loc-
al hotels until the water went down and the railroad could bring in a new train. The flood
crested at 50.1 feet. That is 14.1 feet over the official flood stage at Wheeling.
