This souvenir postcard offers an unusual view of the Parkersburg, West Virginia, floodwall.
Looking from the city toward the river, an open floodwall gate offers a glimpse of nearby
Blennerhassett Island. Local support for erecting the Parkersburg floodwall was strong fol-
lowing the 1937 flood, but World War II delayed the start of construction until 1946. Com-
pleted in 1950, the wall is designed to protect Parkersburg against a flood equal to that of
1913, the city's worst ever.
According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, floods visited Catlettsburg, Kentucky, 36
