In-Depth Information
Much of the area inundated when the levee outside Cairo was dynamited was swampland or
forest, but some of it was fertile farmland tilled by hundreds of hardworking families. The
area's residents were warned to evacuate, but some either did not get the warning or ig-
nored it. Soon rescue boats were busily at work, picking up those marooned by the high wa-
ter. This boat carries a cargo of children and dogs.
