By the time the full force of the flood fell upon Jeffersonville, most of the citizens had been
evacuated. Many of those who were bundled aboard relief trains bound for Indianapolis
were penniless, with little more than the clothes on their backs. When the railroad's passen-
ger coaches were filled, unheated boxcars were pressed into service. When the evacuees re-
turned, they were greeted by scenes such as this, a wrecked house on Chestnut Street.
With the floodwaters gone, Jeffersonville began returning to normal. In this scene at Main
and Fourth Streets, the streetcar is running again, and motorists have converged on a gas
station, hoping the pumps are back in service. You might never know the flood had vis-
