This view shows the flooded Ohio River at the doorsteps of some of Jeffersonville's old
riverfront homes, with the Big Four Railroad Bridge in the background. The bridge was
built in the 1890s for the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St. Louis Railway, nicknamed
the “Big Four Railroad.” No longer needed in today's era of rail mergers, the bridge was
abandoned and its ramps removed in 1969. Today it is often called the “Bridge to
Nowhere.”
As was typical in river towns, many of Jeffersonville's earliest industries were located along
the river. One such was the Ohio Falls Car and Foundry Company, founded by a group of
