In-Depth Information
The old Jeffersonville City Hall, erected on Market Street just west of Spring Street in 1881,
housed the town's offices for more than a half century. In 1935, the municipal government
moved to a new annex at the Clark County Courthouse. The old building deteriorated badly
over the years and finally was demolished in a 1950s urban renewal project. Here it is seen
surrounded by the 1937 floodwaters.
Located at State Street and Woener Avenue, the Indiana Reformatory for Men was a
Romanesque structure constructed in the late 19th century. The state of Indiana closed the
facility, and in 1923, it was sold to the Colgate-Palmolive-Peet Company, which reopened it
the following year as a soap factory. In this aerial view, the 1937 floodwaters can be seen
all but submerging the plant.
