it. Soon water stood 22 feet deep along Spring Street, as shown here. The flooded buildings
on the left include the Jeffersonville Elks Lodge.
The lower floors of these Jeffersonville buildings at Maple and Spring Streets were totally
submerged by the 1937 floodwaters, which crested January 27 at 57.1 feet. That was 40 feet
higher than normal and nearly 10 feet higher than the 1884 crest of 47.4 feet. At the right
can be seen a flooded grocery store operated by the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Com-
pany. Merchants along Spring Street and elsewhere downtown lost virtually their entire
stocks of merchandise.
