Abraham Lincoln almost seems to be walking on water in this flood photograph. Created by
sculptor George Grey Barnard, the cast-bronze Lincoln was installed in 1922 at the Louis-
ville Free Public Library. The library, built in 1902 with a gift from steel tycoon and philan-
thropist Andrew Carnegie, lost 25,000 topics to the 1937 flood.
Paducah, Kentucky, was founded by William Clark, of Lewis and Clark fame, who named it
after Paduke, a Chickasaw chief said to have befriended the region's first white settlers. The
