This aerial view of the flooding in the southwestern corner of Louisville shows the old Ken-
tucky State Fairgrounds and, at top center, the Ford Motor Company auto plant at 1400
South Western Parkway. Designed to produce 400 vehicles a day, the Ford plant employed
more than 1,000 workers. Nine feet of water flooded the plant, forcing it to close for 60 days
while crews repaired the damage.
At the height of the flood, all train service in and out Louisville was cancelled. Special L&N
trains shuttling refugees from the flooded downtown to dry neighborhoods sometimes had to
inch their careful way along tracks covered by 4 feet of water. Other stretches of track were
